Madeleine Barrera

Head Tennis Coach

Last year’s “Coach of the Year,” Maddy has been involved with Special Olympics Virginia for 10 years, coaching soccer and basketball. She also serves on the Young Professionals Board as Volunteer Committees Chair and mentors through the Global Messenger program. The Special Olympics has become a big part of her life — she loves seeing athletes push themselves, try new things, and persevere through challenges. The community Special Olympics fosters is truly one-of-a-kind,” Maddy says. “Everyone works together to lift each other up and create a space where everyone feels included, valued, and empowered.”

Maddy stays active outside of Special Olympics, running half marathons, playing volleyball, and working at United Way of South Hampton Roads. She is thrilled to coach Team Virginia’s tennis athletes at the 2026 USA Games. “I’m excited to step into this experience with the team and know it will be something we all reflect on with pride.”
